Check out this picture below of a single frame in a hive body.
The bees organize in specific ways, dedicating each frame in a hive to a specific purpose. This frame is a brood frame, where the queen lays eggs and the bees raise the brood. Can you spot all the different stages of development in this photo?
- The queen is the long bee in the middle of the frame, facing down.
- The yellowish covered cells are brood cells, from which bees will hatch.
- The white covered cells are honey, kept close to feed the larva.
- Cells containing C-shaped larvae are the youngest bees and remain uncapped until ready.
- Moving outward from the center, the bees are younger, with smaller and smaller larvae visible.
- Towards the edges, you will find empty-looking cells.
- With a keen eye you can see a few eggs standing upright in the middle of an empty looking cell, recently laid by the queen.
