Check out this picture below of a single frame in a hive body.

Description

The bees organize in specific ways, dedicating each frame in a hive to a specific purpose. This frame is a brood frame, where the queen lays eggs and the bees raise the brood. Can you spot all the different stages of development in this photo?

  • The queen is the long bee in the middle of the frame, facing down.
  • The yellowish covered cells are brood cells, from which bees will hatch.
  • The white covered cells are honey, kept close to feed the larva.
  • Cells containing C-shaped larvae are the youngest bees and remain uncapped until ready.
  • Moving outward from the center, the bees are younger, with smaller and smaller larvae visible.
  • Towards the edges, you will find empty-looking cells.
  • With a keen eye you can see a few eggs standing upright in the middle of an empty looking cell, recently laid by the queen.
